Prison in London, which stood on the site of
the Old Bailey central criminal court.
Originally a gatehouse (hence the name), it
was established in the 12th century, rebuilt
after the Great Fire of 1666 and again in
1780, and was demolished 1903. Public
executions were held outside it 1783-1868.
One of the cells is preserved in the Museum
of London.
